序章2 世界の中心にはなにがある？ Introduction 2 What is the Center of the World?

第1会場である横浜美術館の中に入ると、”大きなゴミ箱”が来場者を出迎える。

会場の外にある、ヴィム・ギルボアとギムホンソックの作品と合わせて、今回のトリエンナーレを代表する、マイケル・ランディの作品。

世界の中心には、何があるのか？

ゴミ箱がある、というのが、このトリエンナーレでの答えのようだ。

世界とは、このヨコハマトリエンナーレ2014の全体という意味もある。文字通り、横浜美術館の中央にあたる、このエントランスに、大きなゴミ箱が置かれている。

ゴミ箱は、忘却の容れ物であるという。

考えて見れば、人類が誕生してから、実に多くのことが起こってきた。

私たちは、そのほとんどのことを、すでに忘れてしまっている。

ある時は、いつのまにか忘却し、ある時は、無理矢理、忘却させられてきた。

そうした忘却は、現在、まさに、私たちの目の前で起こっている。

私たちは、大切なことを、いつのまにか自然と忘れ、また、次の世代に、引き継いでおかねばならないものを、権力を握っている人々が、忘却させようと必死になってる。

世界の中心にあるという、忘却の容れ物であるゴミ箱の中を、時に覗いてみることは、決して無駄なことではないだろう。
